UNICEF has a history of claiming not to advocate for abortion, but their documents show otherwise. In addition to this, UNICEF is a regular advocate for all forms of contraception.
In 2010, UNICEF co-authored a document titled, “HIV prevention among most at risk and especially vulnerable adolescents and young people in South Asia.” This document recommends linking “target communities to static centers and health facilities for services such as safe abortion, pregnancy testing, male health needs and practical matters such as appropriate sized condoms for adolescent male sex workers.”
In 2011, UNICEF joined an “Inter-Agency Statement” on sex-selective abortion. While rightly condemning sex-selective abortions, the statement clearly promotes “legal” abortion. This UNICEF document against sex-selective abortions clearly promotes legal abortions. In the Executive Summary, which was signed by UNICEF, it says,
“States have an obligation to ensure that these injustices are addressed without exposing women to the risk of death or serious injury by denying them access to needed services such as safe abortion to the full extent of the law. Such an outcome would represent a further violation of their rights to life and health as guaranteed in international human rights treaties, and committed to in international development agreements.”
In 2013, UNICEF co-authored a document with the World Health Organization on ending preventable deaths in children from pneumonia and diarrhoea. On page 12 of that document, under the framework of a global strategy for the health of women and children, UNICEF and the WHO recommend “Delivering high-quality services and packages of interventions in a continuum of care” including “Safe abortion services (where not prohibited by law).”
In 2011, UNICEF went on record saying, “States have an obligation to ensure that these injustices are addressed without exposing women to the risk of death or serious injury by denying them access to needed services such as safe abortion to the full extent of the law, and other healthcare services.”
Conclusion
UNICEF documents routinely indicate the “need” for expanded access to modern contraceptives, and advocate for legal access to so-called “safe” abortion.
Because of UNICEF’s unwavering promoting of these grave moral evils, no Christian could ever, in good conscience, support, provide funds or a clean image for this organization.
