WASHINGTON, DC – The Lepanto Institute reports that a Vatican representative at the United Nations gave full support to the current draft of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include provisions for abortion and contraception. Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations issued a statement at the UN on 22 June, which said “We support the verbatim inclusion of the sustainable development goals and targets as in the Report of the OWG (Open Working Group).”
The Report of the Open Working Group seeks to ensure universal access to “sexual and reproductive health care services, including for family planning, information and education.”
“When the United Nations mentions family planning and sexual and reproductive health, it’s talking about abortion and contraception,” said Michael Hichborn, president of the Lepanto Institute. “UN documents cited in the draft report show that family planning and reproductive health include all forms of contraception and the provision of so-called ‘safe’ abortion.”
Goal five of the SDGs seeks to “ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action.”
The report by the Lepanto Institute cites both documents, pointing out that the definition of “sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights” contained in them includes both contraception and abortion.
“The Sustainable Development Goals, under the leadership of Jeffrey Sachs, are a population control program, thinly disguised as a poverty-reduction program,” said Hichborn. “Clearly, someone must be deceiving the Archbishop about what the SDGs will do with regard to abortion and contraception. We cannot imagine that he would have endorsed them at all if he knew.”
