The following report was submitted to the Lepanto Institute by a concerned Catholic in Canada, Christian Loew. Upon reviewing Christian Loew’s research, it became immediately obvious that the Congregation of Notre Dame in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is acting directly in contradiction with Catholic moral teaching and the faithful need to be made aware of the situation.
The Congregation of Notre Dame was founded in 1653 by a French saint named Marguerite Bourgeoys. The would-be-Saint hoped to help build the colony of Ville-Marie (now Montreal). She dreamed of educating the women and children of New France and after many hardships she founded the Congregation of Notre Dame (CND) to do just that. In present day, the CND now boasts approximately 150 members and a storied history of more than 300 years of commendable service to the Church.
Unfortunately, in recent years, CND has dramatically deviated from its work of faithful service to the Church. A careful examination of its website, twitter feeds, and the public statements of its sisters reveals that CND is not only promoting homosexuality, but funding pro-homosexual organizations.
According to CND’s webpage listing its various collaborations, CND works with an organization called LOVE – Leave Out Violence.
In fact, CND isn’t just a collaborator with LOVE, it’s a GOLD-level sponsor, providing between $10,000-$24,000 to this organization.
The problem is that while LOVE is an anti-bullying organization, much of its activity is in promotion of the cause of homosexuality. For instance, in 2015 LOVE produced a pro-homosexual propaganda film titled, “That’s So Gay.”
On Twitter, LOVE has made multiple statements in support of transgenderism and homosexuality, such as the following:
On facebook, LOVE celebrated the notorious United States Supreme Court Decision to force states to accept same-sex, so-called “marriage.”
There are many more examples of LOVE’s consistent and constant promotion of the homosexual agenda, making clear to all faithful Catholics that the Congregation of Notre Dame cannot morally finance this organization. But it is, and with large amounts of money.
This is just the tip of CND’s work to promote the homosexual agenda, however. At the conclusion of last year’s Synod on the Family, CND’s published a prayer for “LGBT ‘families”, authored by the heretical group Call to Action. Earlier that same year, just two days after the US Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex “marriage,” CND posted the following on Twitter:
The article linked to by CND was from the Jesuit Post titled #LoveHurts. The article clearly celebrated the same-sex “marriage” ruling, saying:
For those who support it, yesterday’s ruling is against injustice and for equality. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, against religion and for immorality. And there’s a danger if religious voices continue to react as if advocacy for same-sex marriage is in itself a form of religious persecution. It simply is not.
Sr. Susan Kidd, a CND nun and campus minister for the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), posted the same article on her facebook page. Just the day prior, Sr. Susan celebrated the same-sex “marriage” ruling with the following facebook post:
Sr. Susan Kidd’s advocacy of homosexuality isn’t limited to just facebook, however. In October of 2014, the National Catholic Reporter (One of the most heretical “Catholic” publications in print) published an article detailing her interactions with the UPEI’s Rainbow Alliance. According to the article, titled, “Sister only shows love and acceptance,” one of the co-chairs of the campus Rainbow Alliance was somewhat reticent about having any contact with Sr. Susan Kidd because of her affiliation with the Catholic Church. The article says:
Kidd quickly won Cottrell over when she offered up the chaplaincy center for Rainbow Alliance’s annual vigil against homophobia and bullying.
“She was really eager to help us,” Cottrell said. “You can tell that she truly believes that everyone is God’s child and deserves love and acceptance, regardless of who they are.”
Unfortunately, Kidd says, when it comes to sex and sexuality, the church doesn’t always show this same love and acceptance. Instead, it defaults to debate – the stance that anyone disagreeing with the church is categorically wrong and must be brought around.
When asked about her involvement with the LGBT community in her work as well as her Congregation’s support of the pro-LGBT organization LOVE – Leave Out Violence, Sr. Susan Kidd (@SisterSueCND) responded:
Your questions are very relevant, especially with the pastoral tone Pope Francis is encouraging all of us to embrace. My ministry here at UPEI is so diverse in its scope, I take great comfort in the Holy Father’s leadership in these delicate areas of relationships and love
After citing several other examples and asking some further questions, Sister Susan has since declined to respond.
That CND is involved in the promotion of homosexuality is indisputable. Whether this is a matter of poor formation or willful disobedience to the magisterial teachings of the Church is something the local bishop will need to investigate.
Contact Archbishop Christian Lépine and ask him to investigate the Congregation of Notre Dame.

The love that comes from God could never approve and rejoice with what is out of Gods order, and contrary to Gods word. Jesus shed His Blood To redeem us and transform us from all sin and disorder . We can remain in our sin when , we choose to think ,we know better than God.
We have free will. We can not ,call it love when ,we approve and help others remain in their sin (disorder ). That type of thinking does not channel the love of God. That thinking and behavior is from the evil one . He wants to destroy the Holy Spirits life within us. God cannot be taken from us. We alone can turn away from Him . We can turn back to Him anytime. He is always calling us back.
When we disagree with the teachings of Scripture and the Church————Guess who is wrong ? ?
The nuns are out of order! Lord give us all the gift of discernment to recordnize the difference between Your thoughts and the thoughts contrary to Your teachings. This is the year of Mercy. Am 78 yrs old . Mercy on my grammer and punctuation .

‘Reforming the Curia’ seems to be code for “it’s the 1970s again’ so celebrate openness and not those awful old teachers of the law!’ It was evident from Francis’ dropping of the actual reforming of the NCWR with not even so much as a slap on the wrist.
Ed M. 3rd. (@edm3rd) says
As AB Muellar pointed out NO ONE not even a Pope Francis can change Moral law (Sexual and otherwise period) communion for Divorce and remarried Outside of the faith.Uphold the faith like AB Muellar or Resign from the faith. That goes for this apostate nuns in USA &Canada Francis’s advisors and Francis himself Period.
Ed M. 3rd. (@edm3rd) says
Archbishop Muellar is correct. NO ONE not Pope Francis, LCWR or any bishop , Priest or these wayward Canadian nuns can corrupt basic beliefs or Morals sexual and otherwise of the Catholic faith. Either promote the faith or Leave resign or retire. That goes for nuns Bishops R Marx etc. and Pope Francis as well period.
E says
“NO ONE not Pope Francis, LCWR or any bishop , Priest or these wayward Canadian nuns can corrupt basic beliefs or Morals sexual and otherwise of the Catholic faith.” They cannot change them, but they can present a skewed P.O.V. and sow confusion.

God’s first act of creation included ending his “six-days” labour creating humans to his own image and likeness with the command that they continue HIS WORK HIS WAY.Therefore in matters particularly concerning Human Sex it seems humanity must come before Religion and so all involved in living as sexual beings must contribute to help understand and solve the sex problem as the Creator would want. Religion would then complement and confirm that understanding because Religion cannot humanity.EVER
Jill says
What? “Male and female He created them….” Sexuality does not come before our obedience to the will of God for His Human creatures (clearly found both in the OT and especially in what Jesus said and did). This is not about “religion”, this is about doing what we (rather, all of those who have studied the Word both before, and after, the crucifixion of Jesus and His resurrection) have determined God’s intentions for us and the response He expects from us. His creatures. How would the Creator “solve the sex problem”…..what did He do to Sodom and Gomorrah? You appear to be confused. I suggest you read your Bible.

So sad! My mother’s ancestor Michel Parent (1643-1708) settled in Ville Marie in 1660 and knew the founder St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. My father’s ancestor Sieur Etienne Pepin de Lafond (1610-1697) was a founding settler of Trois Rivieres in 1634. His family would settle in Batiscan and Champlain areas where the Congregation of Notre Dame would establish “the” schools for these communities. In Ottawa where I was born and raised, the congregation had the two finest secondary schools for young women…until in the post World War era French Canada began importing cultural Marxism from a dying European culture. Quebec kept its language and lost its faith. By the grace of God, I been allowed to keep the deeper root of the “je me souviens” despite losing the language like the order appears to have lost the charism or founding grace of St. Marguerite. The Paris Commune failed, Marxism is dead in Russia but dying in North America its Frankfurt School Critical Theory “Pansexualism” poisons of the 60s sexual revolution like gender confusion remain.

While I appreciate the sentiments of posters asking that the CND congregation be corrected, please note: religious orders are not under the authority of local bishops, if they are congregations of papal right. They are under the authority of the sacred congregation that deals with religious orders and societies of apostolic life and secular institutes-at the Vatican.
I have known CNDs in the past, whom I am certain are now in heaven. It is a shame that they have been duped by the new revolutionaries. Please, all who read this, pledge 100 rosaries each for the intention of turning that great ship around. It would be a shame if the Church were to lose the gift of the CNDs.

It makes me sick to my stomach that our society has labeled us as “intolerant.” To tell someone that what they are doing is wrong in order to save their souls is NOT “intolerance” but mercy! If they wish to label us as “intolerant,” then I will say that we are intolerant of evil! Intolerance of evil is to speak the truth to others in order to save their souls. But they’ve somehow mixed it up with intolerance of people. I’ll clarify by saying that intolerance of people is to kill them (which, I might add, is what people who support the LGBT movement do to unborn babies).
Our culture has gone insane. They’ve taken the words “intolerance” and “homophobia,” and used them to brainwash people into thinking that NOT standing up for the truth is somehow a “good” thing.
St. Longinus says
Why is everyone so ‘shocked’, ‘surprised’, and ‘dismayed’?
Hasn’t ANYONE been paying attention to what has been going on in Rome since (at least) 1958???
Rome fell to the enemies of Catholicism decades ago.
The last 4 men who said they were pontiffs certainly didn’t act Catholic. Remember the kissing Koran thing and the Assisi thing, and the praying in the synagogues and at the ‘wailing wall’ thing? ?
Really? Everyone is shocked??
I think it’s more likely, everyone has been asleep and/or willfully ignorant.
Sr. Athens says
Being Catholic means believing, living and proclaiming the whole of what the Mother Church teaches: the teachings of Christ attested in the Holy Bible carried on by the living Tradition. “Sr.” Susan Kidd can’t rejoice in a global movement that brings human persons away from their true selves– sons and daughters of God; males and females– nothing in between. Vigilance is so much needed; otherwise, we couldn’t claim to be the ‘brides’ of Christ if our mentality is already different from the Church which is the Body of Christ. As a Sister, I would like to say sorry that the “Congregation of Notre Dame, a Canadian Congregation of Nuns funded and promoted homosexuality” as reported by Lepanto Institute.
Sr. Guenivere says
Wow, there’s a whole lot of judgmental people on this comment thread, who could learn a thing or two from these Sisters.
Rosemary Therese Reid says
It isn’t judgmental to tell the truth about homosexuality, a sin that cries to heaven for vengeance. Hate the sin; love the sinner is what Catholics (and all God’s children) are called to do. No one can measure another’s soul; however, there is such a thing as objective truth. JESUS tells us that he is TRUTH. The lie of homosexuality is destroying souls who do not know the truth.
JESUS, I trust in Thee!
