The primary mission of the Lepanto Institute is to remind the faithful that in this current time of extreme darkness, recourse to Our Lady and the Holy Rosary will save many souls from destruction and crush the enemies of Christ and His Mystical Bride. The logo of the Lepanto Institute, a ship surrounded by a Rosary, is a symbol of this mission. In the immediate sense, it represents the Battle of Lepanto, reminding us that it was the Rosary that secured total victory for the naval fleet called the Holy League against the invading Muslims. At that time, the three greatest threats against Christendom were Protestantism, heresy, and Islam. Today, those same three threats have risen up again to threaten the Children of Holy Mother Church. Because of this, the ship also represents the Barque of Peter, and just as the Rosary secured victory for the Holy League in 1571, it will again secure victory for the Church.
Because this is our mission … it is the reason the Lepanto Institute came into being … we are extremely happy to announce that we are joining with the modern Holy League (led by His Eminence, Raymond Cardinal Burke) in a 54 day Rosary Novena beginning on the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) and ending on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7).
As we are now on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Miracle at Fatima, this novena is EXTREMELY important and timely. October 2017 will witness not only the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of Fatima, but also the 100th anniversary of the Communist October Revolution of Russia and the 500th anniversary of the Martin Luther’s Protestant Revolution. Let’s take a look at a few things to help us gain some perspective about the time we are now living in and to help us see just how important this novena is.
Calling Herself the Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady appeared to three young children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917, giving them a chilling message. After requesting that Russia be consecrated to Her Immaculate Heart, She warned that if her request was not heard that Russia “will spread her errors throughout the entire world, fomenting wars and persecutions of the Church.” Not quite 20 years later, in March of 1937, Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical, Divini Redemptoris on Atheistic Communism. In paragraph 22, Pope Pius XI compares Communism with the anti-Christ saying:
“This, unfortunately, is what we now behold. For the first time in history we are witnessing a struggle, cold-blooded in purpose and mapped out to the least detail, between man and “all that is called God.”
In the opening of his encyclical, Pope Pius XI observed that even then, “entire peoples find themselves in danger of falling back into a barbarism worse than that which oppressed the greater part of the world at the coming of the Redeemer.” He then properly diagnosed the source of this danger as Communism, which he said “aims at upsetting the social order and at undermining the very foundations of Christian civilization.”
There can be no question that such barbarian attitudes now permeate every pore of the civilized world. Beginning with Protestantism, the idea of theological “self-determination” attacked the authority of the Church, paving the way for Christians to inform and guide their own consciences. This rebellion against the authority of the Church made it possible for Christians to reduce the Sacrament of Marriage to a mere contract. This desecration made possible the ideological separation of the unitive and pro-creative elements of the marital act, thereby leading to widespread use of contraception. The use of contraception reduced the image of children as a gift from God to a commodity to be accumulated, avoided, or regulated. And now, because of the poisonous contraceptive mentality has caused the whole world to be drenched in the blood of innocent, preborn children who have been torn from their mothers’ wombs through abortion. It’s no coincidence that the 100th anniversary of Fatima is also the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Revolt.
After nearly a century of the slaughter of innocent children, the most vile and abominable acts are being enshrined in law.
Homosexual relationships are not only protected, but individuals and businesses are being force to affirm such relationships. Women are being forced to share bathrooms with men fantasizing about being women. Incest, euthanasia, polygamy, bestiality … all of these are being presented to people world-wide as “rights” to be tolerated and upheld. Indeed, Pope Pius XI’s warning about “falling back into a barbarism worse than” the times of Pagan Rome has indeed come to pass.
But Pope Pius XI’s warning also came with a clear remedy. He recommended a “world-wide crusade of prayer and penance” imploring “the most powerful intercession of the Immaculate Virgin.” In paragraph 9 of Divini Redemptoris, he beautifully diagnosed the current spiritual war in which we find ourselves, reminding us that Our Lady, the invincible Help of Christians, has already crushed the head of the serpent of old. He said:
“But “unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it.”[38] And so, as a final and most efficacious remedy, We recommend, Venerable Brethren, that in your dioceses you use the most practical means to foster and intensify the spirit of prayer joined with Christian penance. When the Apostles asked the Savior why they had been unable to drive the evil spirit from a demoniac, Our Lord answered: “This kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting.”[39] So, too, the evil which today torments humanity can be conquered only by a world-wide crusade of prayer and penance. We ask especially the Contemplative Orders, men and women, to redouble their prayers and sacrifices to obtain from heaven efficacious aid for the Church in the present struggle. Let them implore also the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Virgin who, having crushed the head of the serpent of old, remains the sure protectress and invincible “Help of Christians.”
Following this recommendation of the Holy Father of happy memory, we join now, and ask Catholics everywhere to join, this “world-wide crusade of prayer and penance” of the new Holy League from August 15 to October 7. On the last day of the novena, there will be a national Rosary Rally held in Union Square, right in front of the U.S. Capital building.
Please join us. Our Lady of Victory, Ora pro nobis!
William Barrocas says
Surely any one with the Spirit Indwelling would agree that we humans are going through unbelievable “Hell-Fire” in the name of whatever ails us. As Catholic Christians we would expect our Good Pope Francis would take us beyond the Jubilee of Mercy to intense penitential prayers as did Pope Pius XI in his days. Thank you all for your initiatives which I fully endorse and shall share with my people too.
